The Fells - Historic Estate
and Gardens on Lake Sunapee The Fells is one of
New England's finest examples of an early 20th-century
summer estate, with outstanding gardens. Stroll the length
of a 100-foot perennial border, and admire the view of Lake
Sunapee from the formal Rose Terrace. A brook trickles to a
Japanese water lily pool in the hillside rock garden, which
includes a nationally significant collection of alpine and
native plants. Hidden behind masses of rhododendron, a
walled "secret" garden awaits discovery. |
|
The 164-acre estate includes
Colonial Revival buildings; the Main House, which is open
for historic tours Memorial Day through Columbus Day.
Hiking trails that border Lake Sunapee are open year-round.
Located in Newbury, New
Hampshire, on the shores of Lake Sunapee, The Fells was the
summer retreat for three generations of the Hay family:
Secretary of State John M. Hay, who also served as private
secretary to Abraham Lincoln; Clarence Hay, a noted
archaeologist, who developed the gardens with his wife,
Alice Appleton Hay; and nature writer John Hay. Now the
estate is open to the public and protected as a wildlife
refuge with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The Fells
is a short drive from the Colby Hill Inn in Henniker, New
Hampshire. |

COVERED BRIDGE EXPERIENCE
Three Night Package
Covered bridges are a unique feature of the New England
landscape. Originally built out of necessity rather than
quaint structures, they transport you back to the days of
horse & buggy. New England's covered bridges span time and
progress, linking more than just the opposite banks of a
river. |
|
There are more covered bridges per square mile in Vermont
and Hew Hampshire than any other place in the world, with
166 authentic covered bridges located throughout these two
States.
Start your Covered Bridge Experience with any of the
three participating Passport Inns. Each will be able to help
you optimize your travel routes to see our exceptional
scenery and as many of our beloved bridges as your time and
interest allows.
Our suggested drives from one inn to the other will also
introduce more Covered Bridges as they carry you on your
way.
A single night with each inn will acquaint you with a
minimum of 10 - 20 bridges. Spend a second night with all of
us and you can be guaranteed the opportunity to double that
fun with twice the number of bridges! Obviously the choice
of how to invest your time is yours; collect more bridge
sightings or concentrate your excitement by spending quality
time with a fewer structures. |
